This is a friendly neighborhood public service announcement. We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but we want to be 100% honest and transparent with you. Sorry to break it to you, but holographic glitter is not biodegradable.
Holographic glitters are gaga gorgeous – we absolutely looove that rainbow shimmer! But to get that rainbow effect, holographic glitters use an embossed base film made from Cellophane™ so they do not break down readily in the natural environment. Creating an embossed base film is not easy, and the embossing process has yet to be perfected for truly biodegradable base film.
Sad to say, but even though so-called “biodegradable” holographic glitters are made with cellulose, they do not even meet industrial composting standards. Your holo glitter will definitely leave a trace when you leave it behind. If you’re committed to only sparkling sustainably, buyer beware!
To get all geeky and super technical about it, so-called “biodegradable” holographic glitters on the market today do not meet EN13432 standards. We would love it if they did. (If you want to read more about these standards and what they mean, read this.) I promise, you will hear us shouting it from the rooftops when bio-holo is more than an illusion.
